Options for sustainable development in rural populations in Andalucía, Spain

Bea obtained her degree in environmental sciences in 2004 at Miguel Hernández University in Elche (Spain). Actually she is working on her PhD at the Arid Zones Experimental Station (National Spanish Council for Scientific Research) in Almería, Spain.

Her PhD project involves construction of a management tool based on system dynamics modelling that is intended to aid local authorities to make sustainable decisions. The study areas are given by two rural villages in Andalucía (Spain) which count with outstanding natural values, but which are also characterized by a depressed and dependent economy. The main challenges to face for sustainability in the area are the increasing scattered urban development, an increasing demand of water especially for irrigation in greenhouses, and landscape degradation. Her model aims to externalize the interdependence between natural and socioeconomic variables by including land use change and ecosystems services, and to identify the main driving forces of change operating in the area.
